UPDATE: Generals 2 will be part of a free package named Command and Conquer 2013. The decision to make it a free-to-play game was revealed at GamesCom. There will now be a single-player campaign as originally planned. The game will now be known as ‘Command and Conquer’.
Many rumours have been spreading around the internet about the possibility of a speedy Red Alert 4 release ever since the release of EA’s last Command and Conquer game, Red Alert 3. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 was released back in 2008, and only the release of Starcraft 2 has provided a decent alternative, and it is the year of 2012!
Update: New Gamescom (2013) Images of Command and Conquer
Good news and bad news folks… are you ready!? Bad news first….. Red Alert 4 isn’t going to be the next Command and Conquer game. Ready for the good news? Command and Conquer Generals 2 is coming next year (2013).
I remember playing Command and Conquer Generals back in 2003 (when the game was released) with a few mates from high school. Yea… I was 15 back then! We would arrange a team game occasionally, better than playing football on a rainy Wednesday, right?
So 9 years later, will Generals 2 give the unbeatable real-time strategy gameplay that it once did? If you are a newcomer to the series then the gameplay can be summed up as: create a base, create an army and create a plan / strategy.
Command & Conquer: Generals 2 Preview
If you’re into strategy games, Command & Conquer: Generals 2 is looking to be “the” game to watch out for.
The basic style behind the Command & Conquer series is virtually unchanged (in terms of gameplay) from previous titles / entries of the series. However, the visuals (as you would expect) have been gratuitously updated, much to our delight (and yours).
The story hinges around a breakdown at a global peace event in which, essentially, world peace is very near to being realized. But world peace doesn’t make for a very interesting war-based strategy game does it? So, as you might expect, a terrorist attack descends upon the treaty event, killing and laying to waste all of the world’s politicians and leaders. Bummer, right? We were so close. Unfortunately for the terrorists, they forgot to take out the Generals, and as you might expect, they are tasked with exacting revenge upon these chaotic forces of destruction. Command & Conquer: Generals 2 is really about eliminating every last vestige of terrorism that’s left; destroying them and every last trace of their evil deeds.
C&C: G2 features quite a number of interesting additions, like the use of the Frostbit 2 engine, which delivers extremely realistic graphics on a very large scale. The physics, the visuals, the battle itself is presented in a very stunning fashion. While you will be competing with other factions for resources and control, C&C: G2 incorporates both competitive as well as cooperative game modes (which will offer gamers a nice change of pace). Additionally, the campaign itself is set to be a very exhilarating experience regardless of which point of view you are viewing the battle and action from (general or terrorist).
All in all, Command & Conquer: Generals 2 is a great looking game that’s packed with new features and promises to deliver an unparalleled online experience for those who like strategy games. While no official release date has been set, the word on the street is that we can expect to see C&C: G2 to hit the stores sometime in 2013.
